Sunny's sushi

Sunny opened her sushi bar (Sushi Isu) in the Caloundra Woolworths yesterday.  Hanno took Jamie to day care and dropped in to see her afterwards. He was really pleased to see the excellent display and a lot of people looking and buying.

That is Sunny on the right.

I think Sunny will do very well in her shop. She is such a hard worker. This is the first time she's done anything like this because she's always been employed as a chef in the past. I am so proud of her. She's been working non-stop these past two weeks and this week she's been getting up early and coming home late to make sure everything was perfect for the opening. She and Jamie stayed here overnight and yesterday morning she left here at 3.45am, after she'd made sure she had everything prepared for Jamie, including making his snacks and lunch for day care and had all his clothes and nap bag ready. Kerry is still working hard in his job. He'll be home on Tuesday and then has a six week holiday so he can help Sunny during this very busy time.

If you're in Caloundra now or over the coming months, drop in and say hello to her. She's right at the front door, in the deli section. After talking with Sunny over the past couple of weeks about the ingredients she's using, I know the sushi is top quality, there is a wide variety and it's super fresh.  :- )

  2. Wish her good luck from me. My DIL opened an exercise studio in July and she is overwhelmed with customers. Sometimes all the hard work pays off. She looks so happy.

  4. That's interesting. We have one of those shops in a grocery here, and I just assumed it was folks that the store hired to work in the sushi, like in the deli. I didn't realize that it was independent folks running the shop. Best of luck to Sunny with her shop and may it be a success.

  5. Congratulations to Sunny on her wonderful new enterprise, I know it will go well. There are now so many people looking for a healthy alternative to fast food while they are out and about and the number of kids who love sushi and gobble it up is amazing.
I am sure all her hard work and attention to freshness will pay off, customers who eat sushi regularly are very aware of freshness and the second rate places don't last long.
Caloundra is a busy town all year round, so the business will be able to keep going well through all seasons.
Being in situ at Woolies means she will never run out of supplies, I am sure that will be a bonus, does she have to use all their produce or is she able to access local growers ?
Kerry will be such a great help while a routine is established and the business is fine tuned as to staff, supplies and turnover, what a lovely exciting time for them.
I am sure you will all take good care of her while things are hectic.

    1. Hello Margaret. AFC, who sell the franchises, deliver most of the ingredients to her but I'm not sure about the fruit and vegetables. I expect it will be from WW.

  6. Rhonda, we will definitely be visiting Sunny's bar when we are in Caloundra as our unit isn't far from the shopping centre. I didn't realise it was actually in the Woolies store itself as I thought it must have been in the aisle up closer to KMart. She certainly will be kept busy and it is good to know that the sushi is top quality. All the best to Sunny on this new journey she is on.

  9. Thanks everyone! I'm sure Sunny will love reading your comments when she has some time. I've just been down to the shop. I took Jamie in to see Sunny before we came home. The fridge was almost empty with all five workers preparing all the different sushis and food packs. It will be fresh every day and it looks amazing.

  15. When I first heard Woolworths was adding sushi bars to their stores I was very skeptical, more tinned tuna in soggy nori, I thought. But this looks fabulous! What a great enterprise for Sunny!

    1. The quality and freshness is first class. Fresh fish is delivered along with her other ingredients and part of her training was slicing the fish at the correct angles with sushi knives. It set up so well and a lot of thought and work has gone into it. I'm very impressed. :- )

  19. Sunny, it looks absolutely delicious! What a difference compared to the bland, factory made sushi that we see in our supermarkets. There is NOTHING like fresh sushi that's handmade with high quality ingredients. Well done! I wish you all the best in your new business. :)

  21. We have one of those Sushi bars in our Woolworths store and I often buy myself a snack. Everything is so delicious I have trouble choosing, and end up buying two or three items to take home.
