  1. Do you think it'll ever end up on somewhere like Amazon? Shipping to the UK makes it out of my reach financially at them moment.

    1. Check out Abe books. On there I found a UK seller who has some copies so you're only paying UK postal rates (actually, the UK seller at the time I ordered mine was free postage to the UK so even better!)

Will this book be available in the USA. It is too $$$ to order from Australia. Would love to own this book. I have followed your blog for a long time now.

    1. As a reader of the book I have to say it would be worth the $$$ on postage. It is a brilliant book. I'm actually borrowing my mums right now but will be buying my own soon

  4. Rhonda, thanks for your replies to these comments. I am in the same position, live in the UK and have followed your blog for a long time.
I would really love to buy a copy, but am disappointed that it seems It won't be available over here, and postage from Australia doubles the price.
I have today returned from a holiday in New Zealand where I tried to buy it, but no success, I'm afraid!
I wish you well with your venture, and keep my fingers crossed that I will be able to own a copy one day!!

  7. Hi Rhonda,
I just wanted to let you know that you have a review of your Book in the APRIL 2012 of COUNTRY STYLE Magazine. It's on page 131 in their Books section, under the finer print, Reviews by Annabel Lawson.

DOWN TO EARTH A GUIDE TO SIMPLE LIVING. by THONDA HETZEL, VIKING, $39.95
Hetzel describes her discovery of a less complicated way to garden, run a home and function as a family. Simplicity crept upon her, she says, like an addiction. My favourite section bears the title Be The Friend You Want To Find.
Most of us believe that people were kinder when they were younger. Make a start on the simple life by embodying a calmly helpful person you recall from long ago.

    Kindest Regards & Best Wishes,
    Lynell :D

  11. Hi Rhonda,
for those purchasing your book through an online store but who would like your signature, you might consider having a bookplate printed up (or create and print your own) which you could sign and post for the cost of an ordinary letter.
    Congratulations on your beautiful book.

Catherine, I do send out book plates in Australia. Send me a stamped self-addressed envelope and I'll send you one. Are you in Australia?

Katie, there's not much better than that - a good book and cuppa and your feet up. Enjoy!

I have already bought the book. How much would it be to get it signed?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Rachael, to have your book signed, you'd have to pay for the postage from your place to me and back again.

  17. Have you or your publisher considered an e-book/kindle format. That would fix many international issues. :) looks great in 'real book' though!

  20. Hi there,
I've just purchased your book from my staff book club and am enthralled. Much of what you write about are changes I've already been making or considering in my own life! I'm a mum of two young children and in my late 30's myself so it's not feasible to do everything, but I found that once I let go of that common thought of "if I just had that one more thing I'd be completely happy" and realised that I have everything I need already, my whole attitude to life changed! I sew and knit and read blogs and am trying to talk my husband into setting up some raised beds for veggies in the garden and try to buy as little new stuff that we don't need as possible! I'm learning to love op shops for books and vintage patterns and trims and the odd piece of fabric or upcyclable item. All whilst I teach part time and continue to be a mum to a 3 and 4 year old! Changes that come slowly are the best!

  22. I just want to let you know that I am really enjoying your book, I received a copy of it from my sister for my birthday, she knew I had been eyeing it out ever since it was made available. So much in the book rings so true to me, there is just so much I can relate to. We are a young family with two children (3 and 2 years old) living in a growing and busy city, you're right when you say it doesn't matter where you live you can still live simply, within your means and make your house a home, because that is exactly what we have done. We don't earn a lot of money, I am a SAHM but we are rich in love and rich in quality of life. One day my husband and I would love to retire and live in a quieter and more rural part of the country, but we have a long way to go, until then we are happy where we are and ready to show (sceptical)people (family and friends) that simple life is not just for the country, and it can still be done in the city or anywhere in the world as long as you are willing to and that no we are not living in deprivation like what most people are lead to believe. Thanks again for such a wonderful book.

  24. I also borrowed your book from the library. I love how it was relevant for all ages. As a 23 year old living with my partner in a resources boom-town, and the inflated prices that brings, I found it so relevant. Thank you for helping me make my home simple and happy. This book is on my Christmas Wish List!

  30. Hi,
I have just found your website and I love it. I am going down this track myself. I will be looking for your book but wondered if you have any answers to possums and growing vege gardens? I can't grow anything except for rosemay, thyme and sage.
Everything is gone as soon as it begins to appear.
    Pesky little possums!

    1. All I can say is WOW! Through the first 5 chapters (and skipping around) and love what you have to say and can't wait to finish your book. Your writing style is an honest experience and sincere guidance.
In my 20's and early 30's I survived the corporate game - while I enjoyed the ladder of success for a while, I hated the politics.
In my mid-30's I decided it wasn't worth it. I wanted to create my own business, acquire land and privacy, a place my family could come and live and have their own little plot, and if needed some help and support.
By the time I was in my early 40's, I had all that and found I had blood pressure over the roof (if 299 doesn't freak you out, nothing will :) Went to a doctor (something I never do) and he gave me a prescription. I looked at the issues and problems with it and decided not to take them. I decided I could fix it by learning about the causes and what natural things might help. I started eating better, real food worked.
Then I started thinking about simplifying, downsizing and making my own food, soap, cleaning supplies.
For the last year I've been working on building a home for a small group of chickens and goats. Last month I got the housing. By next Spring I will have the hay/straw sources and babies. It's a process.
Your housekeeping ideas and cleaning recipes are invaluable to me.
I've always hated housecleaning because I try to do it all at once when people are coming. We rarely have company, so I wait until they are and it ruins my week. I have been using soda, bleach and vinegar lately instead of commercial cleaners, but not properly, too strong. I love your room cleaning buckets, recipes, notes on rags, and other suggestions.
You are changing my life! Since it just two of us, doing a little bit every day, will take all that stress away and I won't feel uncomfortable if someone just shows up... it will be won't be perfect, but it won't be embarrassing and that's ok.
      Thank you Rhonda!

  33. Hello Rhonda, congratulations on your new book "The Simple Home". We remember when you came to promote your "Down to Earth " book at our little coffee shop in Bell "Pips n Cherries". It was back in June 2012 and we were graced with your knowledge and expertise making jam, relish, bread and soap and laundry detergent on a return visit to us. We host a Swap and share morning every month with quite a gathering of like minded ladies sharing their handmade or home grown products. The morning if filled with sharing of ideas, recipes and coffee of course! We now also host a market day every season for like minded people to sell their handmade and homegrown products to the public. It is a very successful market with anywhere from 35-48 stallholders each season and a great turnout by the public. If at anytime you wish to share your new book with us we would LOVE to have you back again. Cheers! Kate, Karen and Annette - Pips n Cherries. BELL.
