RIP Rosie

Rosie grew sicker as the day progressed yesterday. I walked around the garden with her in the afternoon because she couldn't sit still inside. When Hanno came home, he took her to our old vet, the one who operated on her eye a couple of years ago. Rosie had kidney failure and we were advised that even if they started treatment, because of her age and current condition, she probably would not survive. We chose to have her euthanised. She died late yesterday afternoon. This morning we will bury her in the backyard under the Banksia rose where she loved to sit.

We Have A Secret
We have a secret, you and I
that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie
each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand
before we go to bed
and feel the living warmth of you
and touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths
and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind
so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
in every brook I pass
and when I call, no one but I
can see the bending grass.

  4. Rhonda, I am so sorry for your loss. They never live long enough, our furry friends, but I think the only thing sadder than losing them would be never having them in our lives to begin with. Rosie was a beautiful dog. I love that poem, it is so appropriate. Here is another that I have always loved, and that you may not know: http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/housedog.htm

  13. I am so sorry about Rosie. I too know how it feels as I lost my dog 5 years ago, but a cat of ours died 3 years ago. And we are counting the days of our old geriatric cat - she's 20yr and still going strong.

The poem was gorgeous, it brought a lump to my throat while reading it.

    Rainbows Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  59. A Poem for the Grieving…

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die…

I'm sorry to hear of Rosie. Those kinds of decisions we make for our pets are very hard to make. I still remember vividly the day I took my two oldest dogs to the vets for euthanasia. It broke my heart then and still gives me the glooms when I think about it too much. But then I remember the good times we all had and the fact they were such great dogs.

I also know that they are safe, well and at peace wherever they are!

  132. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that, Rhonda. Godspeed, Rosie. :-( It's so hard when an animal you've had with you for so long dies. Even though it's usually a short time for us humans, it was a lifetime for the animal.

I am so sorry, about your loss. My heart so goes out to you. we also had a Rosie (the sweetest pit bull, you ever would meet. We lost her to breast cancer, 5 years ago. My daughter and I were there with her, when she took her last breath.

My deepest condolences for your loss.
We buried our springer spaniel under our rose bush last year. These furry creatures give so much love that the loss of them is tangible.

  151. I've never posted before, but I was so crushed when I read the news that I had to send my best wishes. I'm so sorry. Poor girl; I can tell she had a good life from your stories and pictures.

My husband makes fun of me because I referred to my dog in the present tense for at least five years after she died. I just couldn't bring myself to say, "She was a good dog," because to me she still is. She's a good dog, and so is Rosie.

  152. I hope this will bring you as much comfort as it has brought me.

    A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

  178. Dear Rhonda and Hanno, I was so very sad to hear the news about Rosie, I believe that she will always be with you in spirit, this poem helped me when we lost Anna our lovable springer 4 years ago. (((hugs)))

    I Stood By Your Bed

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep
I whined to you softly As you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times, Your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to re-assure you, That I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, As you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me"
You looked so very tired, And sank into a chair, I tried so hard to let you know, That I was standing there.
It's possible for me, To be so near you every day. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, Then smiled, I think you knew… In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
And when the time is right for you, To cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you, And we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, There is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out…
Then come home to be with me.
