This is what I'm thinking about today - how this beautiful community of souls scattered all over the world came together yesterday to comfort and support a family in distress. I send my sincere thanks for doing exactly what I knew you would do.
"Amy" sent her thanks too and instead of giving you my interpretation of what she said, I'll lay it out here.
"And also your dear, dear readers, the ladies...I am humbled to my knees...all these ladies sending us love and prayers and comfort and condolences and their advice and helping us through their experiences. I have read them through twice and will print it out for us all to carry with us. So much love...this has been far, far better than the grief counsellor whom I don't need any more. This has been just what we have needed, this has touched my heart. And I do think that maybe, in time, maybe the shards will soften. I will take your advice to the nth degree Rhonda, I will keep doing the practical things...I will give my days structure...I will rest on those days that I need to...that's what my boy saw me do all his life, I always tried to show all the children how to 'be'and 'do' in a good way, a positive way, now I will honour my words to them...for my precious boy.
Is there any way I can thank your readers? I appreciate every single one.
And Rhonda from the bottom of my heart I send you my love and thanks, you can not begin to know how much you have helped us all. And Hanno...if only I could give you a hug...thank you...you will always be my role model, I will try very hard. It makes me happy alone to know that you and Rhonda are together, somewhere in this crazy world there are two people shining their light for us all."
Thank you for you visits and comments this week. Take care of yourself, I'll see you again on Monday.

Two photos today to show you the two main characters on my mind. Mary's eggs are hatching, the first was already out and dry when we let the chooks out yesterday morning. We got Mary out to eat then she went straight back to sitting on the eggs. I'm hoping that when I go out this morning, there will be many more little fluff balls. This first one is a Barred Plymouth Rock. Nicky, who sent us the eggs, said you can tell if they're male or female by the markings on the Rocks' heads. I am thinking this is a boy but I'm far from expert on this and I'll have to compare this little chick with the others, hopefully today. We have three Rock eggs and three buff Orpington.
UPDATED: I went out at 5.20am to let the girls out and looked into the nest. I was upset to find Mary sitting beside the eggs, not on them. I didn't see the chick, I thought it was under her wing. Mary looked at me then looked away. I just went out with Hanno, Mary and the chick are both dead. The eggs are stone cold. :- ( We don't know what happened or what has killed Mary. She seemed okay yesterday. We have had sudden deaths like this before, I guess most people with chooks do, but this is very upsetting because she was sitting on eggs and had one chick hatch. I think she must have squashed the chick when she died. I guess we'll have to look for some pullets now.

Today I am thinking about Christmas eve and Christmas day when we'll have family here. I need to work out my menu and decide on what drinks to make. I still have a few litres of pure lemon juice in the freezer and I have elder flowers, hmmmmm.

I'm thinking of the calendulas I picked yesterday. Like everything else in our garden, they're organic, so I'm making calendula salve with them. It's a helpful little home remedy to have on hand for rashes and infections. I'll tell you more about it next week.
Thank you for your visits and comments this week. If you've just discovered my blog, welcome. I hope you find encouragement and interesting information here. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.

Every so often I receive an email asking if a reader can send me something as a gesture of thanks for this blog. Nicky wrote just after my post on chooks to see if we'd like some fertile eggs to put under one of our broodies. We jumped at the chance. We said "yes please!" to six - three buff Orpingtons and three barred Plymouth Rocks. They arrived yesterday. So, this is a little teaser about what my Monday post will be. It's what is on my mind today and what I've been thinking about all week. Thank you Nicky! It is a beautiful gift.

Julie asked to see
the yellow apron I made a few years ago so I've been trying to remember to show it. Of course, it's still being used frequently, still serving a purpose. Good luck with your sewing, Julie.
Hanno and I want to thank you for all the kind and wonderful comments and emails sent this week about the book. We're really excited about it and glad you are too. When I have anymore information about it I'll let you know. I hope you take time out over the weekend to relax and connect with your family and friends. Be kind to yourself. See you all next week.

Today I have berries on my mind. A generous friend gave me two youngberry plants during the week. The photo above is a spray of the not-quite-ripe berries. We're going to plant them in our orchard along the fence line. Youngberries grow well here and fruit in early summer. I usually make two types of jam during the year and hope youngberries will replace our strawberry jam in the future because we won't have to buy the fruit.
Thank you for your visits this week. It's always a joy for me to read your comments and to know there is a growing number of us, all over the world, slowing down and simplifying our lives.

I've done something a bit different for "On my mind" today. I asked Sunny to write a message (under photo) to her family for this lovely photo I took yesterday.
Hello to Sunny's mother, Sunja Cho, and her sisters Yeonhee Kim and Sungji Kim! :- )
Click a couple of times on the photo to enlarge it.
Hi, family, mum and sisters!! How are my nephews and niece? I'm spending lovely time with Kerry, Jamie and his grandparents on the Sunshine Coast. Jamie is growing up well and really fast. Hope we get together here soon. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon.

Yesterday was the busiest day ever on this blog with almost 8000 visitors and 17,000 pages read. I'm guessing the influx was due to the combination of the new Women's Weekly coming out and my interview on Perth's ABC Radio. If you're new to my blog, welcome, I hope you find something of interest on the main page and in the archives. As we move towards another weekend, I hope you've done work you are proud of and that you can rest and relax over the next couple of days. We'll be doing that here too - I have sewing and knitting to help recharge my batteries and, no doubt, Hanno will be in the garden clipping and sowing. I'll see you all next week.

A card came in the mail last week. It was from a family who sent a lovely message about our Airedale Terrier, Alice, who died recently. Hanno and I were really touched by the message and the card, made for us by 8 year old Alice. I've been meaning to write a thank you but didn't get around to it and because it's been on my mind all week, I thought I'd share it with you too. Thank you Alice, you did a wonderful job on the card and we loved seeing our Alice's photo on it.
And now, before I do anything else, I'm going straight to my email to write a proper thank you to Lynn, David and Alice.

I'll be tidying up after a very busy week this morning and attending a meeting this afternoon. But tomorrow, I'll be tending to these loofas and that is what's on my mind today.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend doing what you love. Thank you for visiting me this week. I'll see you again soon.

Today I'll be thinking about finding some cheap fresh fruit that I can use in my preserving class next week. I used those above earlier this year to make nectarine jam. Later today I'll do a blanket reply to everyone who wrote about my gmail account, and write to Google complaining that my account was hacked. If someone can get into my gmail, they could potentially gain access to my blog as well! Tomorrow I hope to reply to a few of the hundred emails I owe. I get so many emails, I never have the time to answer all of them. If you're waiting for one and don't get it by tomorrow, I apologise for not replying.
And an update on my last week's On my mind, the little blue Sacred Kingfisher that slammed into my window last week survived. I've seen him again this week swooping through the garden looking for lizards. He's as good as gold.
Thank you for visiting this week and for the wonderful comments many of you left. I hope you have a beautiful weekend.

Today I'm thinking about this little fellow. He's a
sacred kingfisher and this little one lives here, darting in and out and making the mad screech they have. I've seen him catch lizards and lots of insects as he usually sits on our front fence to eat them. I took the photo above a few weeks ago as he sat on the fronds of our tree fern. Yesterday, as I was talking to Sarndra on the phone, he flew into the glass window I was sitting behind. He fell and looked to be unconscious but when I went outside to find him, he was gone. I'll look around the garden this morning to see if he's injured and hiding.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and good wishes this week. I've been overwhelmed by the number of you who have sent encouragement and support via email too, there must be over a hundred there. I have no hope of answering all of them, so please accept this as my thanks. I really do appreciate your kindness.
ADDITION: I went to look in the garden at first light and didn't find him. Hanno has been working in the front yard this morning and he hasn't mentioned him so I'm guessing he was well enough to fly back to his nest. If he can do that, he might be okay.

This is the last photo I took of Alice on Tuesday. She is rugged up in her favourite blanket.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, they have really helped us during this sad time. We are fine; we realise that death and sadness are a part of life and we just have to give it a bit of time. We're both grateful that we shared our lives with such devoted and dependable dogs, Alice and Rosie, and Murphy before them, another Airedale.
In the end, the vet came to our home to care for Alice. She is now buried in the backyard, under the Banksia rose, next to Rosie. RIP Alice.

When I wandered into Hanno's shed on Wednesday afternoon to take a photo, I re-discovered this old barley twist tea trolley that my sister Tricia gave me. The top shelf was badly deteriorated so Hanno is fixing it. It's on my mind now and I'm hoping it will be ready soon. Hint hint, Hanno. :- )

Sewing is on my mind today - soakers and little summer pyjamas. I'll also start knitting an organic cotton cardigan for Alexander - that's what those red buttons are for. Sometime over the weekend I hope to tidy up my workspace; as usual, it looks like a dog's breakfast. With the weather warming up, there will be time spent in the bush house planting seeds and getting things in order for the hotter months. Time goes so fast for me now.
Thank you for your visits and comments this week. I rarely comment on comments, unless someone asks a specific question, but I read every one and love that connection with you. I feel like I know all my regular readers and often smile as I read your thoughts; each comment adds to my perception of you. I hope you have a beautiful weekend. See you all next week!

I'll finish the book reading this morning, then I have in mind that I'll do some sewing for the babies. Probably a couple more nappy/diaper soakers - the idea and pattern from The Byron Life, and a few bibs. I'm looking forward to a relaxed weekend full of knitting and sewing. I hope your weekend is as restful as you hope it will be.
I just want to take a bit of time to tell you how much I appreciate your support - for me, my blog and the book. Denise asked yesterday if I ever dreamed when I started the blog if I ever thought something as wonderful as a book would happen. Of course the answer to that is no, I didn't have any expectations; I just wanted to write and connect with other women and men who were living as Hanno and I do. There were no thoughts of followers or popularity. And yet here we are - it amazes me when I stop and think about it. So thank you, not only for your good wishes for the book, but for the support and encouragement you've shown over the years that kept me writing.

Please note: I've simplified the explanation of On my Mind (above) because last week someone told me that when she went visiting the blogs that had left a link here, many of them did not link back or say they were part of this. She didn't leave comments on the blogs she thought weren't taking part.
I am thinking about this scene, watching Sunny show Jamie some books we gave him when they came to visit on Wednesday. While I was watching, Sunny and Kerry made a pact - Sunny will read to Jamie in Korean and Kerry will read to him in English. What a lucky boy Jamie is!

For over fifty years it stood in our front yard - a camphor laurel tree, a declared weed in these parts, but also a wonderful shade tree and shelter for all sorts of wild life, including me. It had to come down because it was starting to fruit again and the birds spread the seeds far and wide; especially along the creek where the camphors tend to block the flow. Hanno thought the roots were undermining the house foundations so he's happy it's gone. I'm in two minds. I'll miss the old girl and it will take a long time to get used to that bare space where once there was inviting shade.
