Rhonda and Hanno, as well as her sister Tricia, are busy preparing for Shane and Sarndra's wedding, so there will be no new post from Rhonda for the next few days. I am sure all of you want to send best wishes for a long and wonderful life together to Shane and Sarndra. Leave a comment below for them to read together after the festivities are over (a very long distance e-wedding card, so to speak)! Hugs to all, Sharon
Hello all- I am happy to report that so far we only have a handful of ladies who did not receive their parcels. It is the best we have ever done! The swap buddies who failed to send their parcel will not be allowed to swap again. That may sound mean, but really, one must be sure to live up to their obligations-just as we teach our children to take responsiblity for their actions. I had meant to pair up swappers with their swap angels today, but it turned out to be a very odd day and my toe ended up having a disagreement with a large, heavy falling object and lost-I am off to bed with a broken toe (having done this before-can you say KLUTZ- I know that you really can't do anything about it, either) and some Tylenol. I shall pair each buddy and angel up tomorrow and a big hug and thanks to our swap angels, who will be listed tomorrow.
Charlene, could you e-mail me (Sharon) at cdetroyes at yahoo dot com so that I can get you connected to Suzen, your swap angel. I seem to have an incorrect e-mail address. If there is anyone else tho has not received their parcels yet, please get in touch with me ( I have not heard from my two swap buddies and am wondering if my parcels went astray). If anyone wishes to help out and get those who never received their parcels a tea towel and pot holder ( and become a swap angel) please let me know also. I would like to close this swap up and then start thinking about the next swap.
Hello all- just dropped in to remind everyone about finishing up the swap. We seem to have two missing swap buddies:
Sandra Tolley and
Janet Anderson. Hopefully this will jog their memories and they will contact their swap buddies. I have also been a bit late in sending mine out due to illness in my family- sigh and bah humbug
:( . I have just received the lovely parcels from my swap buddies, both of whom I will be contacting today. I have set up a group flickr account for this swap. Each of you may post and tag your own photos on the site since I seem to have one of those love/ hate relationships with flickr (it regularly eats my photos and makes them disapear into lost internet land). Everyone will be able to click on this hyperlink and then to post and tag their own photos , and I will post the few photos that I have received (if anyone has problems just contact me at cdetroyes at yahoo dot com)
here
Rose and I (Sharon) would like to remind all the ladies who are in the dishtowel and hot pad swap that the deadline is Saturday, April 25. I know that Saturdays are busy family days and that some of you may not get to the Post Office until early in the next week. That usually happens and so do not worry about it. Just let your swap buddy know that you are posting a bit late. I have heard already from some of you who have posted and some of you who will be a few days late and I would like to thank you for letting us know; when you touch base with either Rose or myself it really helps us to keep up-to-date with the swappers! I hope everyone has enjoyed this swap and would love to hear from you with ideas for our next swap.
Hello ladies. Start your creative engines now as we are happy to report that all swappers have made contact with their swap buddies and the swap is off and running! This is the first swap in a very long time and we look forward to seeing everyone's work! Sharon and Rose
Hello all. Our dish/tea towel and pot holder swap seems to be chugging along just fine. Don't forget to e-mail Rose (rosmar at 1earth dot net) or myself Sharon (cdetroyes at yahoo dot com) if you have any problems. Now for another, ahem, yes, you guessed it, swap. Rhonda would like to start up a seed swap. We will be swapping heirloom seeds only. The rules for this swap are very strict. You may only swap within your country and even with in specific territories or states of some countries, such as Australia. If you are interested in swapping heirloom seeds (not the seeds you get at your local big box store), please leave me your name, your country, your territory or state, and your e-mail address (spelled out please). Those ladies who had offered to help with seed swaps please e-mail me, Sharon, (cedtroyes at yahoo dot com) if you wish to help with this seed swap. Rhonda is thinking of making seed swaps a regular happening around here, so if you are interested in this please leave a comment for us, too. Sharon
Hello Ladies,
UPDATE: We have had one swapper who has had to drop out due to a sudden move from one state to another. I have changed her swap buddy and want to remind everyone to make contact with their swap buddy as soon as possible. If there are any other problems, please let Rose or myself (Sharon) know about it so we can get it all the kinks worked out and everyone can start their projects!!
Rose and I are happy to bring you the Dish/Tea Towel and Hot Pad swap list.
We must ask each of you to contact your assigned swap buddy without delay. Please add your swap buddy’s email address to your contact list so her emails to you do not end up in your junk or spam folder.
If you do not hear from your swap buddy this week, please contact Sharon (cdetroyes at yahoo dot com) if you are in one of the pairs numbered 1 through 29, or contact Rose (rosmar at 1earth dot net) if you are in one of the pairs numbered 30 through 58).
We are asking each of you to make at least one dish or tea towel and two hot pads (it is safer to carry hot items with both hands!).
The completion date is Saturday, April 25, 2009, at which time you should have mailed your parcel. We are also asking each of you to include a favorite recipe or two. Please do not forget to say whether temperatures are in Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Have fun with this swap and contact us with any questions or problems.
Hugs,
Sharon and Rose

Hello ladies. The sign-up deadine for the swap is now over. I am glad so many of you have joined our new swap. I am especially happy that there are so many first time swappers and even novice sewers and crafters who have joined in-this is what a swap is all about! Swapping is about learning a new skill or practicing an old skill and making new friends. Rose and I have made lists, are sorting buddies out, and will be back to post the swap buddies at the end of this week-end. I will tell you that there will have plenty of time for this swap (the deadline will be towards the end of April), and I have also been thinking about asking everyone to include a favorite recipe or two with their kitchen creations-it is a wonderful way to share a family or traditional food with far-away friends and to get to know their favorite foods. Until Sunday, Sharon and Rose
Hello all, Sharon here. I am a bit late in announcing a new swap today. I have decided that we will be swapping something very useful and something that can be very creative- kitchen towels and hot pads. I was going to put up my own tutorial for this, but after doing some research on the internet I found many so good tutorials that I will instead give you links to great ideas. For those who like to embroider here is Alicia Paulson of Posy gets Cozy great Polish Folk towels:
http://aliciapaulson.com/Pleasant_Kitchen_Dishtowels.pdf. Her great site is:
http://rosylittlethings.typepad.com/posie_gets_cozy/. Here is a sweet and very different kitchen towel:
http://calamitykim.typepad.com/photos/whip_up_a_darlin_dress_to/index.html . For a fun quilted project I have several links:

http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=550. I also found a felted hot pad at :
http://www.purlbee.com/stars-stripes-felted-hot-pads/ . For those who want to practice their crochet I found this link which will take you to many many links!
http://home.inreach.com/marthac/holder.htmlTo sign up for the swap please leave me (as a comment) :
1. your name
2. your e-mail (written out to stop those nasty spammers),
3. your country
4. whether you want to swap within your country, or internationally. Remember that if you swap internationally it many cost you a wee bit more in postage, but it is also so much fun!
The deadline for sign up is Thursday, Feb. 19Rose will be helping me with the organization and the tracking of the swappers, and I have had many ladies who have signed up as my angels-those who will help me make sure that everyone gets a parcel. A great big thank-you and hug to everyone who is helping! I also wanted to link you to a set of videos on You Tube. They are of Clara, a woman who lived through the Great Depression. She is seen in these videos talking about cooking and giving recipes that her family lived on during those hard years. I found these to be incredibly interesting. Clara is in her 90's now and all I can say is wow! I hope you all enjoy these as much as I did.

Australian Red Cross at :

It seems that every time my husband and I check the news the death toll rises and the devastation is mind-boggling. I have seen many fires having grown up in the Southwestern US. Much of my home town (Los Alamos, New Mexico) burned down a few years ago in a man-made fire, but nothing compares with the loss of life and destruction in the Victorian bush fires. Here in the US, those who wish to donate to the relief efforts should contact their local Red Cross and they will put you in touch with the Red Cross of Australia. We send our prayers to those suffering in this disaster.
Hello ladies. I have decided to continue helping with the swaps. There have been many offers of help and I will be taking those up on their offers. I am hoping to have at least 2 (myself and one other and more if possible) to take care of the regular swaps and then at least 2 to help with the seed swaps (Bad Human for one)-that is so we can swap seeds continually as we live in different hemispheres. For the seed swaps I would love to have at least one from the US, and one from AU. For instance, you cannot ship seeds from country to country, and sometimes even from within a part of the country (such as Tasmania) to other parts of the same country-so having several people to manage the seed swaps would be heaven. Those who have offered to help please e-mail me: Sharon : cdetroyes at yahoo dot com and do put what country you are from and which swap you would like to help with. I am amazed at the generosity of our little community! Hugs and Happy New Year, Sharon
The above is from Sharon, this is me, Rhonda.
I appreciate the offers of help very much. Sharon has carried the swaps for a long time now and I really happy she's decided to continue. Now that she has some helpers, it will make it easier and there may be more swaps as a result. I don't have enough time to give to it now, and to be honest, it's grown like Topsy and it does take some organising. If it weren't for Sharon, and now her helpers, the swaps would have stopped.
Would all those who offered to help, please email Sharon at the address she gave and she will form her teams. And thank you, helpers. It does my heart good to see generosity in action and our little community working so well together.
Belinda, I've forwarded your email on to Sharon.
Hello all. I have been MIA for a bit due to some projects I am working on. I hope everyone is enjoying getting ready for the holidays with their families. It is a wonderful time to spend with friends and family, remembering holidays past and preparing for the holiday to come. As always traditions play an important role in everyone's life and I hope that you remember that traditions are often simple pleasures and not work. Some choose to spend their time running around the malls, but I hope all of us choose a wiser way to prepare for the holidays, celebrating with family and friends. Don't forget that with the economies taking a hit and a hard downturn this year, there are many out there who need a little extra help at this time of year, especially. If you have time, turn to your children and have them help you clean out their drawers and closets and toy boxes; the things that no longer fit, or outgrown toys can be donated. Warm coats are especially needed in colder areas, especially now. If you do go shopping, pick up and extra small toy and take it to your church or your local charity or the local Marine Corps recruiting center (if you live in the US) as a donation for Toys For Tots. It has always been a tradition with my children for each to select a small toy or book, have them buy it with money from their chores and then take it to Toys for Tots or the Salvation Army. It is a tradition we continue to this day, even though my girls are all grown up. If you have the time, go through your pantries and take a few cans or non-perishable foods to your local soup kitchen or church. When you go to the grocery store, it takes very little to buy a few extra cans, an extra turkey or ham that is on sale, an extra bag of beans, really just about anything, for it will all be appreciated by those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This is the time of year to give, which is an important part of the season that often gets overlooked in the frantic search for gifts at the mall. Always remember the Reason for the Season!
I will be updating photos this week-end and also I would like everyone to put their thinking caps on and come up with ideas for our next swap, which will be announced after the New Year. Remember that we are always trying to practice old or new skills, if possible reusing or re-purposing materials, and having a bit of fun along the way. Those who did not send their swap buddies their parcels will not be allowed to sign up for our next swap. Tamara, please send me another e-mail as I accidentally deleted your address. I have something for you.
Hello all. Just a quick note to remind those who have not sent photos of their swap parcels to get them to me soon. I have held off putting new photos up until all were in (it is much easier to do in large batches!). Those who need to send them to me, especially those who received replacement parcels, now is the time. The swap is now over and we will be doing another swap down the road. I am giving you only one link today-but it is a link that keeps on giving. Some of you may remember that
Sew Mama Sew did a home made holiday last year. They are doing it again this year! Keep checking
http://www.sewmamasew.com/blog2/ and every day they will have ideas for gifts for everyone in your family, as well as things for the house! It is a great resource to use over and over again. You can also go back to their hand made holidays from last year for ideas. They also have great tutorials to check out! I want to remind everyone to drop by Rhonda's new blog:
http://simple-green-frugal-co-op.blogspot.com/ where she brings together great writers with ideas that range from sewing to gardening to frugal living. It is a blog that is a wonderful resource for ideas on surviving our economic crunch and living slowly, simply and deliberately. For those who live in the US-don't forget to "Fall back" and change your clocks and your smoke detector batteries. I will be back soon with more links.
UPDATE: Thanks for letting me know Kim and I will take you off the list! Thanks Kris, your parcel will be on its way.
Hello all. I hope that everyone has taken the time to visit Rhonda's new site :
http://simple-green-frugal-co-op.blogspot.com/ you will find lots of information from sewing, cooking, and landscaping ideas to saving money! I also wish to thank the three kind and talented ladies that are helping me make pin cushions and needlebooks for the ladies who never received their parcels from their swap buddies-Ann, Christine, and Stephanie. Kudos ladies!! How lucky I am to belong to a blog community that is so generous and talented! I have heard from four of the ladies who never received their parcels, but still need to hear from Amy-you need to send me an e-mail (cdetroyes at yahoo dot com) with your address and the nameof your swap buddy. As soon as I get the e-mail we can get busy and get parcels out to you!! Oh, and Rhonda, so glad you are getting rain!
UPDATE: Thank-you so much for the offers to help to make sure no one gets left out. Steph and Christine many many thanks and please e-mail me and I will get you a buddy who has been left out. Our blog family is just amazing!!!
Hello ladies. In order to wind up our swap I would like to ask that Tracy G., Lisa (the tin house), Jo (french knots), Amy, Kim, and Kris (quilted simple ) -to please e-mail me today ( with their names and addresses) and I , with the help of Ann (still at home) --many, many thanks my friend) will be getting out pin cushions and needle books to each of them. If I have left anyone off this list, please, please e-mail me as soon as possible. Their swap buddies will go on my naughty swapper list-sort of like Santa's list) and won't be swapping again. We had one swapper who had a valid excuse (and a wonderfully understanding swap buddy) and we hope and pray she gets to feeling better soon. I have a handful of photos still to be posted (including yours Mandy) and those will be up this week. Would Jo (french knots), who has had a bit of trouble reaching me, please forward a copy of your e-mail to Rhonda also, so that we don't have any that go astray and get lost in Internet land! Thanks and hugs, Sharon
Just a quick note to wish everyone relaxing week-end with their families (especially those of us preparing for the cooler weather) and to let you know I have posted the more swap photos on our flickr photostream. There will be one more posting of photos so if you haven't sent yours in, please get them to me soon!! I hope to wrap up this swap in the next week. Hugs Sharon
Hello ladies. I will be posting more of our swap photos tomorrow. Today I would like to give you links for more ideas for making holiday gifts for our friends and families. Making gifts is about putting a little of yourself into something that you give to your friends and family; it is one of the best things you can do for the holidays. You save money, maybe recycle fabrics or remake things, but still give great gifts all the while giving a piece of your heart to the recipient. I have a few more links with great ideas for gifts for everyone in the family. One site I love is Burda Style. You can download free patterns (over 128) for all ages and sexes, and they also have great how-to's- photo tutorials to walk you through step-by-step sewing techniques that can be difficult or confusing;
http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns look through the patterns and click on the how tos for help. Recycling old doilies into useful bags is another idea that is fun with great results:
http://scrumdillydilly.blogspot.com/2008/09/dilly-doily-bag-tutorial.html
I will be posting photos on our flickr site tomorrow and will be back again with ideas for the holidays and the changing seasons next week-end.
Hello ladies. I hope everyone is having or will have a relaxing week-end with time to get all the little things done, as well as time to have a bit of fun with the family. I am trying to work out a few kinks in the pin cushion and water bottle swap-Wendy in the UK, would you please e-mail me, Sharon, at: cdetroyes at yahoo dot com.
I am going to give you a few more sewing blogs to visit as these are great for project ideas and just plain fun!
Erin's blog, is a great read and has a lot of vintage ideas. If you need something fun to do read her "Secret Lives of Dresses"-they are great. Next up is one that has already been mentioned before-
Sew Mamma Sew -
they are chock-full of sewing ideas and tutorials.
Nikki's site gives you ideas on recycling and refashioning clothing- look at some of the past posts too-fun ideas! Another site for sewing with retro or vintage patterns is
Sew Retro, you can often find old patterns in the thrift stores or on line including
this address. I also wish to mention the following, which has been mentioned in the comments too:
Suzical there are plenty of sites to keep you busy there!! For some really lovely fashions and explanations (including how to make a quilt)
this is a great site.
The purl bee has not only sewing and crafting, but knitting too. For sewers who want to really go retro or recreate historical clothing there is
Jenny's site, you can look at her patterns, see her "how tos" and even join her chat group-where you can ask questions to other seamstresses. Don't forget the
Craftzine site for great ideas and how tos gathered from all over the world.
Next week I will give you quilting information and later in the summer I will touch on knitting and crochet. Have a great week-end and Happy 4th to all those in the US.
