Weekend Reading

I had some new paperback Down to Earth books sent to me during the week and decided to sign and sell them. I sent the first batch off yesterday and I have five left.  This offer is for Australian readers only as the postage costs to send anything from Australia is too expensive to justify. So if you want a book, I'll sign one of these and send it to you when I receive your payment and address details. If you already have a copy, you might like to give one to a loved one for Christmas. These will be gone by tonight so if you want one contact me with your name and address and I'll send you my bank details.

Above: Just the normal stuff that's usually on our kitchen bench. Limes, ginger, peppers, bananas, and tomatoes along with cucumbers just picked from the backyard.
Below: A meal from this week's scratch cooking - a frittata with sweet potato, onion, garlic and spinach. Great when you want to use up some eggs (it takes eight), it's fast, easy to make and delicious.

It started getting hot here this week - as I write this, it's 36 C. We're pretty well set up for hot weather here. Our roof is painted with solar reflective paint and it really lowers the temperature inside the house. We have airconditioning with inverter technology (cheaper to run) and solar panels. But when it's hot I go outside less and find things to do indoors instead of pottering around outside. Looks like I'll be getting stuck into my sewing sooner than I expected.

Here are this week's Weekend Reading links. I hope you enjoy them.

Enjoy the weekend. I hope you visit loved ones you haven't seen for a while due to the lockdowns or just do something you love.  See you next week!

  1. Hi Rhonda, Your homegrown produce looks fabulous! You are still so productive; it's wonderful. It is getting colder here in California. I have been stacking wood by the large brick fireplace, and sealed the schoolhouse style windows with plastic inserts. We should have our first snow up in the mountains this weekend. Hope that you and Hanno stay cool. Your solar sounds excellent.

  2. It sounds like you are doing things right for mitigating heat. Where I live in California we don't need A/C I am happy to say. Your book looks very appealing.

  3. Hello Rhonda, the house shoes are very cute! I was making slippers yesterday, by a great coincidence, but I'm going to make a pair of these as well. Thanks for the link! Oh, in case you haven't noticed, your link to the soured cream isn't working ... Sorry to hear you've got temps in the 30s already. Here in Sydney, I still have the winter doona on the bed!

  6. Thanks for posting about the skin cancer a couple of weeks ago. It made me finally go and have a skin check.
Fortunately, I've avoided the sun all my life so even though I'm very pale, I had no moles that looked dodgy.

  7. Cream into sour cream, I would never have thought of that, the link didnt open but I googled how to do it and found many recipies, so last night the cream I would normally have disposed of, was turned into sour cream, I followed the steps left the concoction overnight and this morning I have home made sour cream, Rhonda thank you so much for your continued pearls of wisdom, you are an inspiration for all living a simpler life which is a much happier life of the one in which we are seduced into spending all our hard earned money in the false belief we will be happy, I am so much happier with less, cheers Kat Gippsland Victoria
