Tomorrow is Hanno's 80th birthday so our family will be here for lunch and celebrations. I met Hanno when he was 37 and I was 28, we sure have come a long way since then 😳.
Over the past couple of days we've been shopping for food and we've both been tidying the house and doing odds and ends. I've already made bread and butter cucumbers and chilli jam, today I'll make lemon curd and a pastry shell for a lemon meringue pie that I'll make up and bake this afternoon. I'll also make the same chocolate vegan cake I made last month. Hanno wants a Beesting cake and my sister Tricia is giving him that via our local bakery. I'll pick that up in the morning when I collect fresh rye sourdough and bread rolls. Sadly, our family who live in New South Wales won't be able to attend but I'm sure we'll talk on the phone sometime during the day.
I used Nigella's recipe for the chilli jam.
I'll put your mind at ease in case you think we're just eating cake. It's Hanno's wish to have a traditional German Arbendbrot. In addition to the bread, we'll have a selection of cold meats and cheeses, chicken salad, green salad and pickles. We have tea, coffee and water but I have a couple of bottles of champagne too just in case anyone wants to toast the birthday boy. We're both looking forward to tomorrow, I'm sure it will be a day to remember.
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
