Weekend reading

Brrrr, it's cold here this morning but it should warm up later with a sunny day. I hope if your weather is cold, you have warm soup, gloves and jumpers on hand. I hope if it's warm where you are that you have salads, cold drinks and a fan. But who knows what could happen. With the weather the way it is, we don't always get what is expected.

Thank you for your visits this week, and for your comments. Comments mean a lot more than a few words on a screen. It's like you're taking the time to wave back and say "hello, I'm here too!" Those of us who write blogs, need that. Not just me, we all need it.  Whatever you're doing this weekend, take some time for yourself, sit down and relax for a while. The work will still be there when you get back to it.

  1. Are those napkins in that basket? So lovely! I made some napkins which was easy -- trying to wean my family off paper goods -- not nearly so easy! I may be making some more though and forcing the issue!

    1. Yes, they're homemade napkins. I'm pleased to hear you're moving away from paper goods. That is a very worthwhile thing to do. I might do another post on making napkins. It might encourage others as well. xx

  3. It is very hot and humid here in the southeastern USA. Cold drinks and fans are in order! Your cold morning sounds wonderful but we always want what we do not have! In spite of the heat I am making blueberry preserves today. It will be worth it when they are done. Have a happy weekend!

  5. Good Morning Rhonda. I do pop in regularly, just don't always leave a comment. But then again.... friends sometimes don't have to say anything. We just enjoy each others company. Have a lovely weekend. Hugs Sue x

  6. Good morning, Rhonda. I saw on the news that the Sunshine Coast was down to 3 degrees yesterday. We went there during the winter holidays this time last year and didn't take really warm clothes as we didn't think it got too cold there and we had to go and buy parkas to warm up! I agree with you about readers leaving comments on a blog. It does mean so much. Have a relaxing weekend. Showers are forecast for us tomorrow but I won't hold my breath!

  7. Good morning Rhonda what a lovely new photo of you. I was pleasantly surprised what a small world it is & got a warm feeling taking to others that follow your blog while at spinning class on Wednesday as the lady sitting next to me lent over telling me a lady she works with knows me, well not in person but Juile is on the DTE forum & saw me post on another blog about joining a spinning group so she asked her to say hi then I was talking about you, your books & other lady there has your book & was reading here that morning so we had a wonder chat about simple living & doing what you can. I was saddened as one of the ladies said it sometime made her feel guilty as she did not do it all I just told her Rhonda would not want you to feel that way you do what suits your family & life. Even one small change is a step in the right direction. You touch so many people & change lives for the better. Hope it warms up there as the day progresses, its very chilly here & we all have colds at the moment. Have a great week end

    1. What a small world! You know Sarah, it amazes me when I hear how my book and blog have connected with people all around the world. It makes me feel very humble that I could do that. I'm pleased you said that to the lady. Enjoy your weaving. xx

  9. Happy Friday Rhonda! It's rather sad about the CWA halls. I think this is also due to lost skills (having to pay for basic repairs and maintenance rather than the community chipping in to get the job done). It's very sad. I've been meaning to join even though I'm in the city just to help by paying a financial membership and adding to the member numbers. I really liked the article about a baby simplifying your life. Love that she articulated the difference between simple and easy- like pushing a boulder up a hill! Brilliant! I certainly think having my daughter really set my simple life in motion. It had been brewing for a while but that huge change to what was important really brought it to a head. Enjoy your weekend!

  14. I so appreciate your weekend reading list Rhonda. Somehow after a week at work it's as though I have a gentle natured 'ally' to commune with on the weekend. Love your new profile pic too. I generally don't say much here or on the forums, but....are you getting younger?!!

  15. Hi Rhonda!

Great to see the cloth napkins. We grew up with them, and they were some of our first ironing projects. Mother had our names embroidered on, so we also learned how to iron them from the back to make the embroidery stand out. By the time our children arrived, cloth napkins were not in vogue, so I was able to find very nice new/almost new ones at the second hand stores and garage sales for a pittance of their true value (cost of cloth, labor, etc). My granddaughter loves choosing from the selection and using cloth napkins, too.

The companion planting article on weekend reading reminded me of two sites I have found very valuable:
    http://www.ghorganics.com/page2.html
gives the most comprehensive list of garden plants that I have come across online, regarding companion planting.

thekkreport.com (via pinterest) has images of very interesting gardens that use companion planting principles along with biointensive techniques. I am no longer finding the information at the site mentioned, but you can see it on pinterest. These plans served as very useful guides for me to construct “pretty” “edible” gardens in a small space. There may be other good sites like this that I don’t know about, but would love to hear about, too!

    Thanks for weekend reading!!

  16. That is sad news about the CWA...I also hope it doesn't disappear. Might just see if there is a branch near me. It is a bit difficult to get to meetings due to my husbands health though...still another membership is support.

  17. Hello Rhonda, I hope your day warmed up eventually, It's been another cold day in Perth. A lovely hot cup of tea always helps. I read each post you write but rarely comment, but on reflection I should take the time each post to thank you for your words and time. Your blog keeps me centred in this sometimes busy distracting world and helps me focus on what I really want to give my attention to.

  18. Hi Rhonda, I enjoyed reading your book The Simple Life, and I took some time to write down my priorities and goals in light of what you suggested. I love your blog. Thanks for the encouragement to live simply. I was down-sized out of corporate America and a good job in 2008 when all the economic stuff hit, and it was the best thing that happened to me. I didn't realize it for awhile, but it was a blessing. Now I love the freedom of working from home. I make things to sell, and teach classes on simple skills that the young moms don't know-- like making soup from leftovers, baking bread and basic sewing. And thank you for teaching me to honor the simple chores -- I do them, just didn't focus on them in the right way till now. Blessings on all the work of your hands . . . have a great summer --oh, wait -- winter.
