Weekend reading

I'm looking forward to conducting simple living workshops at Stockyard Creek in the Lockyer Valley this weekend. I love meeting people who are open to new ideas and change. I think I'll enjoy it a lot. I'll take photos so you can see what we got up to. I hope you enjoy your weekend too.

Thanks for your visits this week and for leaving comments that we all read. Commenting is another way of sharing and your comment may make a real difference to someone's life.

Ewww, what's found in food.

If you're feeling a bit down today, you have to look at this. Cat in a shark suit + vacuum cleaner, duck and hammerhead dog. Yes, you did read that correctly. LOL - You Tube

  1. I always enjoy your weekend reading links, Rhonda.

RE: young Americans are driving less, I have direct evidence of this. My daughter is of age to get her driving permit, and has no interest in doing so. Nor do any of her friends of similar age. Between the cost of gas and car insurance, and having heard more than one horror story about older kids getting into car wrecks, I doubt that any of them will embrace driving with anything like the enthusiasm we did when we were her age. I'm hoping that this is the generation that will finally bring mass transit to our suburbs.

  5. Hi Rhonda

I saw this article about the resurgence of the well stocked larder and thought of you - http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2013/may/17/larder-back-from-the-cold

    Have a great weekend.

  6. After reading Recessions can hurt, but austerity kills, I can tell you that those of us in the USA with health insurance are not much better off because our out of pocket costs are so high. We have insurance but cannot afford to use it! Our daughter had an ER visit in Feb and our out of pocket cost was just over $2000 and she had no expensive tests or procedures! We do everything we can to stay well at home with natural healthcare such as essential oils and by just taking care of ourselves and eating a healthy diet. Sad but true!

  7. RHONDA, that NYTimes article has me bursting with excitement! I just sent it to everybody I know! I'm trying to figure some things out about my acid reflux and I've been slowly convinced that I need to nurture my flora and fauna, but I haven't read much about it. THANK YOU for this link! WOnderful weekend reading indeed.

  9. Most U.S. young people continue to get their driver's license and their own car because it is an adult responsibility that they are expected to take upon themselves.

The few that I have witnessed in my life and in the neighborhood who don't want to learn how to drive, or own a car are the ones who don't want the responsibility nor expense, and yet seem to feel entitled to getting rides from others. Constantly. They are seen as "users". Nothing great about that.

The vast, vast, vast majority of U.S. young people in this Rocky Mountain state get their own license, their own car, and their own part-time job, for that matter. Around here, it's called growing up. Mass transit may work well in the congested and compact urban areas on the East Coast, but not here. The distances to travel are just too great.

Our metro area cities are building a light raid line, but it's creating density instead of alleviating it: the land developers and city officials "infill" nice open areas with high-rise apartments and condominiums built very close together in order to "take advantage of the light-rail line." It's creating congestion! Crazy.

However, the majority voted to pay taxes in order to build the line (including me) because it's going to be needed in 15-30 years, and it's cheaper to built it now. It's just frustrating to watch the greedy city government officials and developers deliberately create congestion just to get tax revenue and profits.
