Weekend reading

You might have noticed I've been quiet for a couple of weeks. I've been sick (not COVID-19) and uninterested in doing anything. All I did was make the bed, cook a daily meal and after that, I was either asleep or sitting. I'm finishing off some antibiotics today and I'm pleased to tell you that I started feeling better a couple of days ago and now I'm on the verge of being back to my normal self.

Hanno got over his hiccups after taking two lots of medication - the second lot fixed him. He was exhausted after that because he'd been hiccuping for over a week. He tried all the regular cures, plus what readers sent in, but nothing worked. So when it finally left, he was exhausted. Despite that, he's been working in the garden the past few days and now I'm feeling better, hopefully, I'll join him out there to plant up seedlings and do some pruning. I'll start sewing again soon and today I'll make a batch of soap.

I hope you're doing well. This Easter will be unlike any other we've lived through but apparently, it's vital we all stay at home. I hope everyone does that because if we can keep our COVID-19 numbers down, we'll be closer to returning to our regular lives, even though that is probably still months away.   So what are you doing? How much has changed in your home in the last month? I'd love to know.

Look after yourself and stay safe. I'm thinking of you. xx

  1. I'm happy to hear you and Hanno are doing much better health wise. I too have been sick with a lingering, mild cold and I've had it for a very long time. The older I get it seems the climate where I live does not agree with me. I have to stay here nonetheless and I do love it when the weather is good. As for what I'm doing, I have been doing the usual routine of household chores (cooking, cleaning, the occasional shopping). Normally I would read a lot or blog more but haven't been up to it. Happy Easter weekend. It will be one we remember for very different reasons.

  2. Hi Rhonda, I'm sorry to hear that you've been sick, but was pleased to read that you are feeling better now. Poor Hanno, I can't imagine having the hiccups for all that time. How strange. I have been so thankful for all that your blog has taught us during this pandemic. The stockpile, garden, and comforting home have all been a Godsend. I plan to make another batch of soap again, too. We sure need it now, with all of this hand washing. Take care of yourselves, and thanks for posting.

  3. Dear Rhonda. Good news that you and Hanno are both feeling much better and your desire to do the things you love is returning.
First 2 weeks was food based for me. Now we are in the 3rd week of lockdown I am finishing the quilt I made for my son-in-law and plans for week 4 is finishing the cardigan I started last Winter then realised it was too short!! so undid the cast on edge and knitted extra rows down to correct the length.. only a few rows if the extended bands to go and it's finished.
I hope you have a lovely Easter

    1. Are you the knitting Karen on my IG? I would never have thought of undoing the cast on and adding extra rows, that's brilliant. Maybe I'm sicker than I thought. 🤭

    2. No I am a different Karen, Rhonda
I belong to a Friendship Group where at the age of 60 I am the youngest there.
Who better to ask what to do about my cardigan than the wise and experienced older women.

  4. Rhonda, I have been thinking about you both and was wondering if you were well. Glad to hear you are on the mend once again. I am getting back into planting veggies again after letting the gardens go during the dreadful heat and the constantly dry weather. It has cooled down here up on the hill so it is a lovely time to be out in the garden. Give that crazy dog a pat for me.

    1. What a coincidence, Chel. Gracie said just this morning to say hello to you when I could.

We've got cooler weather here too, I'm enjoying it a lot. Good luck with your garden this season. xx

  5. Glad you are okay Rhonda and feeling better. Hanno, too. Those hiccups can be quite annoying. I learned a few years ago to sip off the opposite side of a cup. It is hard to do, but when my s/o had an attack not long ago I mentioned it to him and he tried it. He is convinced now! Yes, this year Easter will be different alright. But I have been staying home a lot with the exception of the very occasional trip to get groceries. I wear a mask and gloves, and hope I am helping to stay well and to avoid making anyone sick. Happy Easter Rhonda and Hanno!

    1. He tried that, Hopflower, plus a gazillion other things and nothing worked but the drugs. The drugs were terrible too but at least they stopped the hiccupping.

  6. Hi Rhonda, happy to hear you're feeling better, and that Hanno has beaten those dreaded hiccoughs. The kitchen has been busy here dealing with our apple harvest. The lady in the snow apples were early harvest and are stored in our spare fridge mostly for eating, i check them regularly and if necessary will preserve/freeze any that show sighns of deteriorating. Our other tree has granny smiths and another type of apple, not sure what but they eat well and are also good for puree. The best of these are also chilled and the rest are the ones keeping me busy. We have apple jam and jelly, apple cakes in the freezer along with stewed apple and now I want to try a lightly fizzed apple drink (non alcoholic). I've not tried this with apples before but have used lemons and raspberries so fingers crossed. Take care and keep well, hugs for Gracie. Kate (Tassie) x

  8. Wishing you both a Happy Easter! So sorry to hear you have been unwell, but pleased you are now on the mend. Poor Hanno having hiccups for so long, he must be relieved to have them stopped. I have been knitting a cardigan for myself, I'm now onto the first sleeve. We have planted some little succulents in pots to have in our alfresco I also have a few indoors on my kitchen windowsill. xx

  9. Hello Dear Rhonda,
I've been checking in every day to see if you were back and I am so glad to hear you're both feeling better. It's uplifting. You must be so glad. Today our family went for a long bike ride and now plan on decorating eggs and working in the garden...our first ever veggie patch. It's doing really well, although something is eating the basil. I picked a ton of lemons from a friend's yard around the corner and made your cordial recipe this week, as well as your lemon butter. Take care Rhonda.

  10. Yes, so glad to hear you are both on the mend after not being well. Have missed you. Hopefully you will get some energy back quickly.
I have been watching gardening on Utube...planting winter seedlings...and assisting my elderly parents with groceries and medical apts. The garden is my happy place in these times ☺

  11. Sorry to hear you and Hanno have been unwell. I can imagine how exhausting hiccups would have been for poor Hanno. I hate having them for a just a short time. So happy to hear you are starting to feel better.

I am busy setting up containers for growing more veggies at the moment, and doing more cooking/baking than usual.

It is absolutely beautiful weather here.

    Take care,
    xTania

  12. Very glad that both you and Hanno are beginning to feel better now. I can't imagine having hiccups for over a week!! I have been busy here at home though not in any kind of exhausting way. Today, I made my first ever batch of hot cross buns, planted out the bromeliads that my neighbour gave to me, played cards with my son and did some sewing. I need to learn how to make bias binding! Have a happy weekend, Rhonda. Xx Meg

  15. Sorry to read that you have been un-well, but glad that you are on the mend. Thank God it wasn't COVID-19.

Easter will be like any other, that's for sure. I plan to have a multi celebration dinner with my family when this is all over, regardless of what time of year it is.!

  16. I hit "publish" too soon! I just wanted to add that I am glad for Hanno that the hiccuping experience has ended. How awful that must of been! And thank you for the links that you have been publishing. I have been enjoying reading them.

Have a blessed Easter, even if it's just the three of you. I have of course included that sweet pupper Gracie!

  19. I am glad you and Hanno are fairing relatively well through this pandemic! It is amazing to me what kinds of things people are freaking out about running out of here in America. TP being the top of the list. I have TP on hand only for guests since reading long time ago about using old sheets and pillow cases. Not much different from the diaper pail and washing diapers days.

I wanted to thank you for the Liziqi liink...It has been cold and rainy here today and has caused my fibro to kick in so I have been under my electric blankie since getting my chores done today and have watched her non-stop all day...so soothing and absolutely beautiful. What a gorgeous "shopping center" she has. No worries about food and the virus causing your food stores to be empty there eh? Be safe and well.

  20. A man hiccuped his entire life apparently in middle America. It was a question on the quiz show on ABC with Paul Dermot just recently. He was a farmer and lived into his ripe old age. Imagine that!

I have been doing the de-cluttering dance after doing some minor renovations over the holidays on my kitchen and finally today just before I have to start my remote work from home (I'm a teacher) and my kids start tomorrow it seems to be coming together. I have 4 children of varying ages so everyone needs their space. Nothing like having a deadline to get things going. I'm also making time to potter in the garden as that has been feeding my soul - even if it's just 5 minutes to look for those darn pesky green caterpillars!! I put them on an old log as a sacrificial offering to the garden birds!
