You, me and the kitchen sink

Today's kitchen is from Annie Jones in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.  It looks like Annie does a lot of cooking in that kitchen.
Annie writes:
"In the first picture you'll see my double sink, with the coffee maker to the left and the dish drainer to the right. The dish drainer is holding baking stones and pizza pans. There is a lot of sunlight coming through the window, but it is shaded by our crab-apple tree in the summer.

In the second picture, taken on a different day, shows more pots and pans in the drainer. In addition to washing dishes by hand, I also use our dishwasher. You'll see my Bosch mixer on the very far left. I wouldn't want to be without it for mixing bread dough. I have a gas range and an electric combination microwave/convection oven above it. On the stovetop is a blue enamel pot. I use it exclusively for brewing a gallon of tea at a time for iced tea."

Please don't forget to comment. A comment is like payment for the time taken to post, and in this case in sending in the photos.  Many of us were enthusiastic about this series, so make sure all the photos get a good number of comments.  I don't want any of the people sending in photos to regret joining in.  Thank you friends.

  2. Lovely kitchen! Great idea about brewing up a ton of tea for iced tea. I'll be doing that this year instead of buying the sugar kind.

  4. This is a very American kitchen. From the first picture, I thought it looked just like my mom's kitchen (but much neater), but the second picture called up a kitchen in a house we almost bought.

  13. My two most favorite rooms in a house or apartment is the kitchen and the bathroom. I used to cook a lot more, but still think that the kitchen is really the heart of the home. Nice photos. Thanks for sharing them with us.

  17. All that light must be such a wonderful thing! :)

I used Alton Brown's recommendation of buying an unglazed tile from the hardware store to bake pizza on and it's been lovely. At the time I didn't have more than a few dollars to spend on a pizza stone. I made certain I was buying a natural one that hadn't been glazed, so I wouldn't have to worry about things like lead. Your stones look like they would be a dream to bake on though! :D

    Someone asked about iced tea-
Iced tea is super easy to make.

You put some tea bags into a pot of boiling water, let them steep for a couple minutes (just 1-3 minutes is all for black tea, too long and the bitter tannins overwhelm the flavor), strain into a pitcher filled with ice, and then top off the pitcher with more ice.

If you want sweet tea, dissolve the sugar or other sweetener into the hot tea before you pour it into the pitcher.

You can use any sort of tea, black, green, herbal.

How many teabags you use determines how strong the tea will be. 4-6 teabags is recommended for a gallon of iced tea, and the recommendation is geared towards people who like their tea average-to-weak in strength.

I personally use about 10 teabags per gallon, so that when the tea is served over ice on a hot day and the ice melts, my tea doesn't get too diluted. heh.

If you want to make a gallon of tea, heat a half gallon of water in your pot. If you want to make two gallons of tea, heat a gallon in your pot.

Or, you could heat the whole amount in the pot, and then just let the tea cool down before putting it in your pitcher. I tend to be a bit impatient, hence why I use the ice cubes.

Experiment! Your tastes will vary from recipes, and the results you get will also vary by the brand/crop of tea you are using.

(For 'proper' Southern tea you would make the tea as black as midnight and sweeter than sin. ie, at least 1 1/2 cups of sugar per gallon, and at least 8 teabags of black tea per gallon but more is better.)

Note- once tea is cold it is nearly impossible to dissolve sugar into it. Honey and agave nectar also taste reasonably pleasant in iced teas, better in the herbal ones in my opinion than in black tea. If you like the taste of stevia, that works well with iced tea too, and gives you a sweetness without the sugar.
