Surprise! I'm back ... for good this time. Instagram became an impossible place for me. They kept sending me messages asking if I'd make my page available for advertisers! Of course, I said no but that didn't stop them. It's such a change from what Instagram started as. But enough of that, the important part of this post is to explain why I returned here instead of taking my writing offline for good. For a few years
Grandma Donna and I have talked online face-to-face and it's been such a pleasure for me to get to know her. We have a lot in common. We both feel a responsibility to share what we know with others. With the cost of living crisis, learning how to cook from scratch, appreciate the work we do in our homes, shop to a budget and pay off debt will help people grow stronger. The best place to do that is our blogs because we have no advertising police harassing us, the space is unlimited, we can put up tons of photos when we want to and, well, it just feels like home. I will close my Instagram account. 🎈

When I decided I'd come back I knew I had to do some work on the blog and make it welcoming and as clear as it could be. There are still some things I'm not happy with but I'm putting the blog back up today and I'll work on the problems when I have time and behind the scenes. All the big work is done and I doubt I'll have to shut the blog again.

A few years ago there was a facility in Blogger to notify my readers that there was a new post ready for reading. That was taken away and not replaced with anything that worked but now I want to recommend
Feedly Classic <- Apple iPad and iPhone version to you. Clicking on the link will take you to the download page.
This is the link for Android They are both free apps. I don't know why there is a new version because the older version, Feedly Classic, is better. When you download the app, all you have to do is to transfer the URL addresses of the things you want to read. I'd like you to download the app and add my URL address to Feedly so you know when a new post is waiting for you. This is my URL
https://down---to---earth.blogspot.com/
This is my beautiful grandson, Jamie. He'll be 15 next month. 😳
There is so much information here that I hope you can use to help you live a simplified and comfortable life. There's a lot about gardening, baking, cooking from scratch, housework, families, storing food and saving money. If you look at the bottom of this page, some popular posts are there to help guide you. Or you can do a search in the side bar for a topic you're looking for. The search feature works best with a one or two word search enquiry.
I've been removing a small selection of posts from the blog because they're no longer relevant. I've brought back the comments section - I read through some of the comments and it was so motivating for me; I thank all those who do leave a comment. I spend most of my time offline now so I won't be writing frequently like in the old days when I had so much to share, but there'll be a couple of new posts up every month. My topics will be the same but different. 😉 I'll write more about how I live and what I do to make it work. If you can't find what you're interested in, and you've tried what I suggested above, put it in the comments. That will take longer because there will be days when I don't come online and I always have my notifications turned off.
And finally, a word about my wonderful sidekick, Gracie. She's been well but she's slowing down, like me. She'll be 10 years old in August and I'll be 78 in April. She still acts like a puppy most of the time, still does her zoomies, still loves the grandchildren visiting and still loves sleeping. She's the ideal companion and I love her dearly. There's a new puppy next door with the kelpie, their old dog has gone to heaven. She watches them from the verandah but will only go over to sniff the other dogs when I go to the fence to talk with my neighbours. We'll see how that develops
So there you have it, my friends, we're back here where we started nearly 20 years ago. If it's your first time here, welcome, if you've been here before, welcome. Let's put our aprons on and get to work.

ReplyDeleteOh, what a joy to see you are back Rhonda! I discovered your blog around 2012 as a very young woman first living out of home - I was 19-20 then, and I’m 33 now. Your blog was such a source of comfort and affirmation for me of the kind of simple life I wanted to live, and am happy to say have continued to develop.
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to have you back. I have missed you and wondered how you were doing. Your blog has helped me in so many ways to get where I am now.

ReplyDeleteI am still a follower… I moved from Cranbourne Victoria to Bellbowrie Queensland in October 2008 when my son was 2.5. I’d already been reading your blog a few years. Then I moved from Bellbowrie to Gladstone my son was 11. I’ve been in Houston 7 years and now we have 3.1 acres and my son is 18.5…. I finally have a place to set down roots after renting different houses since 2009… and I’ve been reading down- - - to- - - earth blogspot all the way along. I’m glad the blog is back in place, I didn’t like Instagram.
DeleteWelcome back! Your wise words are definitely needed Rhonda. I’m about to make your soap recipe again this week, never fails .

Oh Rhonda! So happy to have you back! I've been longing for a return to the old blogging days. I'm on Substack now, but so tempted to wake up my old blog as well.
ReplyDeleteYour plan to be mostly offline and just "pop in" sounds like a good one.
Welcome home! Jackiex

Great to see you back! You've always been a mentor to me. I walk past my laundry and see my knitted washcloths and think of you! I made some of your recipes. Jenny in Wollongong.
ReplyDeleteAre you the Jenny Hanno and I had morning tea with in Wollongong?

ReplyDeleteWhy aren’t I surprised.
ReplyDeleteYou’re back home again.
We’ve been quietly waiting, knowing that you’d be back home soon enough.
You’ll never know the powerful good you’ve done for so many (self included especially).
So, where were we again ??!!
Oh, yes, that’s right, you were saying …
Hi Rhonda, lovely to have you back here! And you’re right, with the cost of living crisis at the moment it’s very timely to have all your cost saving homemaking knowledge available.
ReplyDeleteFijn dat je er weer bent..
ReplyDeleteLovely to see your blog back up and running 💚
ReplyDeleteSo good to see you back. I mainly use Instagram to follow folk who inspire me with their quilts or gardens. I wanted to make my own laundry mix again, so will go and check what you advise.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely birthday present, a letter from Rhonda.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Are you psychic? I was thinking about you just a couple of days ago and wondering how you are. It's great to have you back!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to see you here again Rhonda!
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming back, I did follow you on Instagram but with algorythms etc we don't always (often) get to see the posts of those we follow, I find reading blogs much the better option
ReplyDeleteRhonda,
ReplyDeleteI am SO happy that your blog is up and running again. I am a mom living in the US and everything you post is such an inspiration to me. We need information about how to live well without getting sucked into the consumerist whirlpool. I have all of your books and reference them regularly and always look to you for guidance. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you share.
Hanne

Welcome back, you have been missed and it is a wonderful start to February to see your writing again.
ReplyDelete(I have been using Feedly for years, ever since Google shut down the Reader, and when blogs goes offline I do not usually delete the feed - so imagine my (happy) surprise when you popped up in my "New Feeds" today!)
Beth
Welcome back.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are back. I was just thinking about this blog when I pulled out my knitting to make some new dishcloths.
ReplyDeleteJoy (VA)
How delightful to find a blog post from you this morning. Your wisdom and practical skills are needed more than ever. A post that I can read, without all the ads and moving parts, has always been much preferred. So glad you're back. I look forward to seeing what you and Gracie get up to.
ReplyDeleteYay!!! Looking forward to catching up with you and Gracie. Look after yourselves.
ReplyDeletedaisy from North Carolina
So lovely to see a post from you Rhonda, your writing is such a blessing. I frequently re read your older posts for inspiration and timely reminders. I love Grandma Donna’s place too. I much prefer reading a good blog post as opposed to the endless trawling through reels and stories on Instagram ❤️
ReplyDeleteOh happy day, Rhonda!! Welcome back! Rebecca
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda Jean, so happy to read a post from you. I'm looking forward to reading more.
ReplyDeleteGracie is just as old as our Leila. She will be 10 in May. She is a flatcoated retriever and she is also slowing down.
Have a wonderful day. Warm wishes from The Netherlands ❤️
Welcome back! You are always a breath of fresh air in our complicated world. andrea
ReplyDeleteSo good to have you back Rhonda. Your books and blog have been so helpful in this journey we are all on.
ReplyDeleteHold the phone… 78?!? Rhonda, you are a legend in the best way! Thank you for bringing us to your blog. I yearn to go fully offline, but as someone in the social media industry , I cannot. However, your work is such a breath of fresh air, that I’m grateful you brought us to this back to your roots for those of us who found you elsewhere. Bless you, and thank you always!
ReplyDeleteP.s… please more grace content. She is adorable and my dream dog.
Yes, I was born in 1948, so I'm getting older by the day. I'll ask Gracie if she wants more photos taken but I think she'll say yes. And about going offline, if you can't do that you go offline as much as you can and be satisfied with that.
DeleteIt’s so good to see you back. I’ve missed your blog and your wise presence here.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you back here!
ReplyDeleteI was just tickled this morning to see this! Not sure if you like this idea...but could you incorporate posts/information/insight about living alone in widowhood? I have no mentors for that. I feel like I manage along OK, just no one to show me how to enrich this life that I am learning. I do love all things home, too. I also love my blog for all the reasons you listed and I have done quite a bit of purging of old posts myself.
ReplyDeleteCertainly Gina, that's already on my list.
DeleteWelcome back, Rhonda! Saw your announcement on Instagram and was thrilled! I’ve followed you for many years and read all your wonderful books. Your new space here looks really nice, pics are really clear and crisp. Your blog is a welcome space for sanity and common sense. Welcome back🌞
ReplyDeleteRebecca
PS: I’m in Kentucky, USA, it’s cold and dreary here, love seeing your gardens and plants. Gives me hope Spring is coming 🥰
Que alegría enorme tenerte de nuevo aquí. Me siento más acompañada ! Abrazo gigante
ReplyDeleteWhat a good surprise ! Th
ReplyDeleteWhat a good surprise ! Thank you to be there again !!
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant. Glad you are back!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see you back Rhonda, though of course I'm most happy when you're doing what's right for you whether it's stepping away or popping up again! It's been so many years since I started following you, back sometime around 2008 or 2009 when the economy had tanked and I was in college fearing for my future. You taught me so many lessons and now even though the economy feels like it's tanking again, I feel much more prepared for myself and my family! My toddler loves paging through your book and I love it so much, even if he's just looking at the pictures and poking a finger at the lists, it's such a lovely reminder to stay in a slower more mindful mindset. You're an eternal inspiration for me. -Rachel, Oregon USA
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! I’m so pleased you’ve returned. Charmaine UK
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely surprise to have you pop up on my Feedly today! I recently read my way right through the blog, finishing just as you stopped blogging, so wonderful to have you and your wisdom back again.
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to see you back on your blog! I was on here a couple of weeks ago, as I love rereading your posts and seeing your garden. And I was browsing your books here at home. Great to see Gracie too! How can she be 10?! I remember her arriving as a puppy!
ReplyDeleteSo very pleased you're back.
ReplyDeleteNicole
Welcome back! I've been enjoying your posts since 2007. I rarely comment but I wanted you to know how much I love your writings.
ReplyDeleteHi , o this is wonderful news. I had only just found you when you stopped. I am so looking forward to reading and learning as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteFtm
So glad you're back🤩
ReplyDeleteLovely to see you back Rhonda, thank you for all your posts. J in Tassie x
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you back, really missed your blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming back to blogging.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda,
ReplyDeleteI'd love to hear more about the experience of aging. What should we know? How can we best prepare? What should we appreciate now (I'm in my 40s!) that we don't realise!?
Ageing, growing older and living alone are all on my list. 🙂
DeleteThis makes me very happy. And as a loyal follower of grandma Donna I get such a kick out of knowing that you two are good friends and can imagine you chattering away on FaceTime. In these terrible, lousy, rotten days, the two you are like a breath of fresh air. I feel so blessed to get this news today.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing you back!!!
ReplyDeleteI will echo what everyone else has said, Rhonda.....WELCOME BACK, DEAR HEART!! Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda! I’ve missed your writing. Glad you’re back!

ReplyDeleteThis is a bit of good news in a world turned upside down. Welcome Back, Rhonda!
ReplyDeleteIt’s so nice to see a new post! I discovered your blog about a month before you stopped blogging, and I’ve been reading through it since in chronological order. I just hit the end and was going to miss it - it’s nice to have more! I also bought both of your books in the past six months and enjoyed them very much. Thank you for your work!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, missed you and so pleased you're blogging again.
ReplyDeleteGlad you’re back!
ReplyDeleteSo, so, so so happy. Good to have you back!!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you back online - I have missed your posts!
ReplyDeleteSo pleased to see you here again! I have never understood Instagram or Facebook, it only stresses me to look for something there and I could never find your posts there.
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t believe that Gracie is 10 now, I so vividly remember you bringing her home all those years ago. She is the same age as my Golden Retriever Stella, who is also getting older as we all are!
Best wishes from sunny Sydney
Tanja
Hi Rhonda, I’m so excited to see you back, it’s like an old friend has come home. Welcome home , you have been missed.
ReplyDeleteOh, so lovely to see a new post on the blog. I have been following your blog and then Instagram since 2008 when I had my first baby. She will be 18 this year, where have the years gone? When I feel overwhelmed by the world, revisiting your posts helps me remember what is important in life. Thank you
ReplyDeletewelcome back, I am so excited you are back here, your posts on living a simple rewarding life are just the best, Rhonda you and Grandma Donna are like big sisters to me, thankyou thankyou thankyou from Katrina in Gippsland, Victoria
ReplyDeleteI also recently deleted Instagram and returned to blogging! I am having a hard time finding like minded bloggers. There used to be so many. I am very happy you are here again!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to have you back. I followed you for so many years when when my children were growing and I was farming. I learned so much from you and still use your beef stew recipe. I am now retired, living alone with my dog, Finn, and my children are adults with partners and a few grandchildren. Although I no longer farm, I still have a homestead and I have spent the last few years setting up my new home to age gracefully in place, much like you and Hanno did. Looking forward to revisiting old posts and reading the new ones.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pleasure to see you posting again. Your grandson was certainly a beautiful child.
ReplyDeleteHe is still a beautiful person but he’s 6 ft tall now. 🙂
DeleteThanks for returning and writing again, Rhonda. I love your blog posts and have been following you for a number of years. Glad to see you back!
ReplyDeleteIt’s good to see you back! I started a cooking blog in 2000 and much has changed. I have also slowed down and rarely post. I used to do ads and make some money but removed them all a while back so folks can just browse the recipes. I can’t remember when I found your blog but have really enjoyed it over the years and thank you for your efforts.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back!!! Long time reader, first time commenter. I have both your books and have followed your blog over the years. I'm glad you're back because I left social media a few years ago and had no way of keeping up with your work
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely thrilled to see this today...thank you and welcome home...coffeee Sue xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda so good that you are back and the blog looks terrific. I have been thinking or you and your lovely writings a lot lately ad I am finally retiring from my 2 day a week job ( at 75). So thinking to revist your site for inspiration in becoming a proper home maker, imagine my delight to see your post ! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda, So happy to see you are blogging again. Your blog looks lovely - always so bright and cheerful! Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 2026. Helena C.

ReplyDeleteWelcome back to blogland. Blogger still has a section for blogs that one follow
ReplyDeleteWelcome home Rhonda :) I found your blog many years ago when we had a young family and we were doing all we could with the way we lived so I could stay at home while the children were young. I am very thankful for that time, we managed 10 years in the end living on one salary, and your blog gave me so much inspiration on how to live a simple, frugal but fulfilling life. I even started my own blog during that time (which has been dormant a long time now) as I wanted to inspire others as much as you had inspired me. I did do a double take though with Jamie's wee photo, when I saw you mention that he is 15 now, I thought there is no way as I'm sure I remember him being a baby when I started following you, and then Gracie being 10! I counted back and its been about 15 years since I found your blog. Our own children are now grown, our eldest has left home and our youngest has just finished high school - my how time flies. I'm not so keen on social media myself and I am so glad you are back sharing a little slice of your life with us, your blog has always made me feel like I'm visiting a family member's home for a cuppa and a natter :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome Home my friend! I have followed you since 2008. Even when you went quiet, I came here to read. I missed you. I found Grandma Donna through your blog & I love her too! Thanks for giving to others! Because of you, I make laundry soap, regular soap, yogurt, & so much more! I've tried crocheting but I'm not very good at it. You inspire me!
ReplyDeleteI meant to say, I also have all your books! 8:)
ReplyDeleteThank you for coming back. I missed you. It is so good to read how you simplified your life and thereby enriched it. I have tried to live a simple life for many years now and I agree with you that it is very fulfilling. It makes me content and happy. Sometimes I think there are only very few people living like this and when I am reading your blog I realize I am not alone.
ReplyDeleteHi Rhonda, I retired in January to care for my 96 year old Dad. Looking forward to reading your blog.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're back! As a professional working in the digital space, I want to say that you should have your own website, preferably with your own domain name. I feel that a website is the best way to go instagram could change things without warning, making it hard for me to get recommended your posts, and it doesn't have RSS, which I use to follow your blog, so I'm glad you're back!
ReplyDeleteI thought about getting my own domain name many years ago and decided against it. That was the right decision for me. I am closing my Instagram account so I don’t care what they do.
Delete🥂🥂🍾🍾💃💃💐💐🌷🌷🌼🌼🌝🌝
ReplyDeleteGrateful to see that you have opened this blog back up. Even in a limited capacity! I've enjoyed Grandma Donna's blog as well, and I'm pretty sure you introduced me to her. Grateful to the wise ladies in this world that can share their wisdom and journey with us that are not as far on the journey.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, it it fabulous to see your post! You were missed! I can’t tell you how much I learned from your posts, as well as the comfort it gave me on days when I just wasn’t in the mood to do the work necessary. Thank you, Hilogene in Az
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you decided to stay. I've been reading your blog for years and have learned so much from you. I really appreciate all that you do. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am thrilled to see you back here! I haven't commented before, but I've read every post since I discovered your blog in early 2008. All those years brought about many changes and I was always able to find a grounding place right here. Welcome home!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful surprise! I've been checking your blog every few weeks just hoping you might come back and here you are! Thank you for being such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteYou were missed, I have lurked you blog for many years
ReplyDeleteWell, Thank Goodness you came back! I was heartbroken when I read your last post saying you would never be back! I've blogged for 19years and still going strong! I do it for my future generations! My GGGGGreatgrans and beyond might want to know who I was...now they can read about me and my life. Yours can to...now!
ReplyDeleteBig hug
Donna in Texas

ReplyDeleteWelcome back Rhonda, you have been SO missed, I always read Grandma Donna so thanks to her for advising that you back in your ‘spiritual home’ here on your blog, cannot wait to follow you forward on this next leg of your journey. Much love to you from Jan in Castle Gresley, UK

ReplyDeleteHello from the midwest of Ohio, USA. I was at the tale end of your writing to find you from other Bloggers. So nice to hear that you are writing again. I enjoy seeing your photos and the stories behind how to care for house and home on a budget. We're senior citizens now also, so trying to economize when possible. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteI am overjoyed to see you back, Rhonda! I too don't like Insta, it is a mass of ads nowadays. Welcome back and have a great time!
ReplyDeleteI was reading Grandma Donna's blog and when she mentioned you were back I was so happy! I'm not on IG so I didn't get your words of wisdom. I remember when y'all got Gracie and I can't believe she will be 10! I'm so glad you are back :)
