Weekend reading

The makings of a salad picked fresh from the garden during the week.

Usually I make a ritual of sitting down to watch the first ball bowled of the first cricket test. Then I sit there on and off throughout the day, knitting and watching. That test started yesterday and I forgot it was on! I used to have an excellent memory so I feel its loss deeply, especially when I forget something I've done for many years. It's one of the downsides of ageing that I'm still getting used to. I don't forget a lot of things but when it's the cricket, pfttttt! I'm not happy. I was busy all day yesterday because Jamie was here and we had the extended family over for dinner. So today, I'm having the day off. Today I'll watch the second day of the test match, I'll sew my Maggie rabbit and I might even pretend it's yesterday. ;- )  I wonder what you'll be doing. See you next week, friends.

  3. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your cricket. My son turns 14 on Saturday, so there will be 6 Teen boys here, so I will just be feeding them and you know how they eat Rhonda. I love your weekend reads so I will also work through them. Have a relaxing weekend and thank you for all the hard work you put into your blog. There are many people out there including myself that have reaped years of good advice from you, so thank you. You are very much appreciated. Love Lors

  4. I'm glad to hear you've had a good week, Rhonda. This time of year can get very busy! I don't think your age is letting you down at all! At the grand old age of 23 I managed yesterday to forget my keys and lock myself out of the house, and forget my turn off and miss my exit. I like to think of memory more on a continuum, it ebbs and flows depending on the other things we have in our lives and is very personal. As long as you had a great day with family, to hell with the cricket! (Ha). I don't often comment, but I just wanted to say I really enjoy your weekly reading lists. I read the Guardian too and never seem to find such good articles!
This week I enjoyed the article on hand writing. I'm sad to see it declining. I am sure it will have a revival of sorts as all things seem to come back into Vogue. There is nothing quite as personal as handwriting, and a hand written letter or note is always treasured. Stay well,
    Bec x

    1. Hello Bec, a lovely comment, thank you. I agree with you about handwriting. I make sure I write something by hand every day. My mother used to make a real fuss of our writing and the nuns who taught me gave high praise for a good hand. xx

  5. Rhonda,
I giggled over your "memory loss", not because it is funny, but because it is so familiar! Personally, I see my "forgetfulness" representing the fact that I am so busy living that I put other things aside so that I may enjoy the moment I am in! :) That's my story and I am sticking to it... Of course, I do ask the Mister to check me before I leave for work to be sure everything is present and accounted for...earring match, hair combed, shoes match (I have had two pairs of the same shoes in different colors and have worn one of each..) and that my clothes are right side out (I taught a whole day with my dress wrong-side-out and didn't know it until I saw the shoulder pad flapping...)... Enjoy your weekend! :)

  6. This may be a silly question, but what is that white veg in the middle of your salad fixings?

    1. It's a daikon radish, Helena. We grow them primarily for Sunny to make her kimchi but I occasionally grate one for a salad.

  7. I am forty tree and my husband 42 and this year we both completely forgot our wedding anniversary! Three days after the missed avent, our 14 year old son said: didn't you have a wedding anniversary in october! Oops. Thanks for the reading list, agree about the handwriting very much. I hope and believe in a revival ahead. Wish you both a lovely weekend. Pam in Norway

  8. Enjoy the weekend and the cricket, Rhonda. I'll be raking a lot of leaves, making dinner for my Mom tonight, and watching the finale of the Great British Bake Off on Sunday - can't wait for that! Beth in MN
