Envirosax giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY IS FINISHED
Envirosax contacted me a couple of weeks ago asking if I was interested in looking at their product - environmentally friendly shopping bags. It's a local Queensland company, so, of course, I took a look. They started production on the Gold Coast (200 kms from where I live) but took their production to China to keep the prices down. I had a concern about this and asked about it, here is their reply:
They were originally developed and made on the Gold Coast, however we have now moved the factory to China as we have bought a manufacturer there to keep the price of the bags down. It is a company owned factory and the quality and service is excellent.
The management staff are all from the Gold Coast and actually live and supervise at the factory all year round. Fair trade and fair wages is a huge issue in china but we go above and beyond the fair trade guidelines to ensure fair wage, ethical working conditions etc and the owners personally visit the factory at least once a year.
The bags are produced all through eco-friendly processes. Using recyclable waterless non-toxic inks etc and all our packaging materials are recycled.

They offered to send some bags for me to check out and I did that yesterday. I used the organic cotton bag as my work bag instead of my basket. I worked 12 hours yesterday so I loaded it up with my big Stanley tea flask, some lunch and dinner, a sack of pens and pencils, knitting, notebooks, memory stick and folders. It was packed. I'm happy to report it was easy and comfortable to carry and it held the heavy load with ease. I also have a couple of the Graphic series bags here to use next time we go grocery shopping but I've checked out their quality and stitching and I think they'll serve us well for a long period of time. I really like how the Graphic series bags fold up into a small bundle (above) that you can keep in your hand bag. When you see that fruit and vegetables at a good price, you know you'll always have your shopping bag with you.

The bags are sold online and in Australia, NZ, USA, UK, Europe and Asia.

I have five bags to giveaway to my readers. If you'd like to win one of these bags, please go to the Envirosax site and look at the selection. There are bags in the Graphic series, the Organic series and the Kid's series, decide which bag you like best and make a comment, naming the bag, in today's comments. The giveaway will end on Friday when I'll announce the winners. A bag will be sent to five winners. Good luck, everyone.

Photos of Justin Timberlake using his Envirosax bags. He is the same age as my sons so it was nice to see him doing the grocery shopping - that kind of normalcy assures me that he handles his fame well. :- )

ADDITION: This giveaway is available to all readers, no matter where you live. Envirosax will send internationally.

  1. Oooooh, these look nice and sturdy and VERY useful. Very hard to decide which is the nicest, but I do thin that the organic cotton one (with running dog, as pictured on your Blog, Rhonda) would serve my family of six well, in terms of standing up to our shopping needs.
Have a lovely day and I look forward to reading your next entry (as I am almost finished with going through your archives).

I love the Envirosax, anything in the graphic or organic series. They're great. But, I don't know if you will want to ship to the U.S. If not, I still wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog! It's an inspiration :)

  12. Wow, aren't those nice bags! I like the Organic series, especially the Organic Cotton Bag 1. What a great message.

I use cloth bags all the time. I used to be able to pick them up at yard sales and such, but now that it's such a 'trend', I can't seem to find any anymore. That is probably a good thing; means folks are using them instead of selling them.

  13. Oh, those bags are neat! My favorite is the Linen #4 - the pink with the white mandala - beautiful!

  14. Hi Rhonda. Just wanted to say I read your blog all the time but have never commented. I love all your examples of living a simpler life and doing so many things for yourself. I also make my own bread and have just started crocheting my own dish rags and scrubbers. I also have a 10x10 plot in our local community garden this year so I'm enjoying growing many of our own veggies. I'm writing to tell you I have owned these bags from Envirosax for the last year or so. I bought the black and white set and use them every week. My local grocery store gives me 5 cents per bag when I use them. They hold so much more than the store's plastic bags but more than that, I'm just glad to be doing my share and not wasting resources. I like that they're light weight and can fold up to a smaller size. Usually I just put 4 bags in one bag and carry them that way. Anyone who wins or purchases these bags would be super happy with them, I'm sure!

  29. Hi Rhonda,

Did the answers from Envirosax satisfy you that the owners really are watching after the labor situation at their location in China? It stikes me that if they bought a factory in China to reduce the costs of production, that translates into cheap labor by Chinese workers who may or may not be well cared for. I'd still be very leery of promoting a Chinese product unless I could be convinced that the working conditions there are humane. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Envirosax's Chinese factory - I'm just saying that for me, I try not to buy anything made in China unless I'm absolutely positive that no one is being hurt by their work. For now, I can't be sure, so I just try to steer clear of made in China products, which is not easy in today's world market. I truly don't mean to take offense at your endorsement; I'm just posing the question as to how sure you are that the working conditions are as the Envirosacx folks say they are. One way conditions will improve in impoverished countries is if we show our dissapproval by not buying the products. Again, I hope I've not offended you by commenting about this.

  38. Hi Rhonda,

I love your blog, it's always so informative....

What a lovely range of bags from Envirosax, with stores like Target now phasing out plastic bags (and rightly so) people will now have to take shopping bags with them...It would make a nice change to see everyone carry cloth bags instead of plastic.

I would be proud to own any one of the designs and if I won one it would be even better.

    Regards,
    Elizabeth (Gold Coast)

  52. Hi Rhonda,
I love Jessi & Lulu from the kids choice. I've been searching for a bag to use for my 2yr old's library bag. Eveyr since I read somewhere on your blog about going to the library instead of buying books we have been going every Saturday morning as a family, and borrowing LOTs of books. My little boy loves it, and is learning so many new things. Plus we have save heaps of money by not buying books, and thus not having to go to the shops as often. Yay =)

Thanks for being so conscientous with your writing, I really look forward to reading your daily post first thing in the morning.

Thought you might like to know that this past week I have been teaching myself to knit and feel like I am doing quite a good job. I have made 2 and 1/2 dish cloths! One question though, do you think wool works, or just cotton?

    Cheers,
    Miriam

  54. Oh and Rhonda, one more thing. I was speaking to my mum yesterday (she has just moved to Tanzania for four years with my father and brother - my dad is the principal of a new school that has just opened in a small community). Mum was saying how poor everyone is, and that girls simply can't come to school when they have their period because they can't afford to buy pads.
You have inspired me to learn how to sew so that I can make cloth pads to send over. Thanks.

Also, when I mentioned to mum about knitting dishcloths she was very interested as using shop-bought/disposale things over there just isnt practicle due to no rubbish systems, limited shops, and people not having the money to buy. She is going to teach some of the women there to knit, and then make dishcloths with them! =)

Small world - one blog, helping a community in Africa!

  56. My local quilt shop stocks these and so they appear quite regulalry in birthday gift or secret santa swaps I have two and they are fantastic with a big family like mine I can tell you they take all the heavy shopping and the quality is excellent, I have had mine for over a year and they are still going strong. The two I have are like parachite fabric but they are so strong and they wash really well and fold up into nothing.

I would love another one but I willnot be selfish so please don't count me in the draw I want others to see how fabulous these things are.

I did look at the kid's bags, but right now can't afford to buy the boys one each plus their ever increasing list of school supplies, and gym shoes plus other school shoes. It was 94 degrees here in Yoder, Colorado today. It might rain later which would help to cool things off. Sorry to ramble.

Thanks for such an amazing blog. It is an inspiration for me so often and keeps me motivated. It seems you are always writing about just what I'm needing encouragement on that day! I especially appreciate your thoughts on homemaking and the gift and treasure that it is. As a 25 y.o. home-schooling momma of three little ones, trying to tend a garden, chickens, and get away from processed food, and always renting a home it's nice to be reminded that what I'm doing is important work!!

    THANK YOU!

  67. I love the look of the organic range - especially the bamboo's. For me, however, because I'm always purchasing more than I'd initially intended (the idea of going back to the shops with 3 small kids terrifies me more than being laden with too much shopping), I need as many bags folded into tiny bundles as can be squeezed into my handbag. The graphic series is perfect for my needs and I love the fun colours of the Retro's, especially retro graphic #3.

  68. What an incredible variety of designs. They are all great and there must be something there for almost everyone! 99. Wow - those are cool bags - so many fun patterns. My favs are Amazonia bag #5 and Mikado bag #3. Adorable!

I have been using my own reusable bags at the grocery store for quite some time now, but how great that these fold up so small! Perfect to keep with you at all times - thanks Rhonda for posting these!

  102. Hi Rhonda, what gorgeous bags and enviro friendly too! A bonus. Thank you for bringing these to our attention, so hard to choose one I like but the one from the Organic series Linen Bag 4 (Mandala on pink) is just sooo pretty. Regardless of whether or not I win one I think I will invest in some anyway. Thank you for your wonderful blog, I hope you are feeling better after your flu. Hmmm, now to go and chop up those baby clothes into useful rags!

  105. I particularly like the mikado pouch series, but my favourite is probably the mikado bag 3 :-)

I really like the idea of a bag that folds up small enough to fit in my handbag - I struggle to remember to get bags out of the car and then return them once I've unpacked the groceries, so a handbag-bag would definitely improve my plastic bag avoidance.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I already have a couple of these- they are fantastic to keep in your handbag- for shopping and carrying around bits and pieces for the kids. I love the kids series, especially Piggy in the Middle. Thanks, Jane

The Monochromatic - for understated yet tasteful flair that is not narrative, not thematic and not gender specific. Envirosax has respected what black and white can still do _ something that stylish men and women intuitively know. The Monochromatic - strong, uncomplicated, uncompromising and unmistakable.

It would be lovely to try one of the linen or bamboo bags. I would prefer to stay away from the polyester ones though. Plastic anything...I hate it with a vengence.

  125. I've owned some Envirosax for over a year and they are lasting really well! I love my red and white one for the markets as it holds so, so much. And my Organic hemp one for around town to collect the mail etc.

I just adore the Sowing Seeds of Change one in the Organic series, it's the perfect thing to use and spread such a versatile message.

Thanks for sharing with us about such a great product, Rhonda!

I happen to think that the Flora Punch series is simply Scrumptious! It's totally me! In a very hippy Mama sort of way, stressed from moving & everything goes into a bag sort of way! Love them!! I promise I would/will care for them & tell ALL my girlfriends!!

  128. Heya Rhonda! Great idea for a competition...

I'd have to say that 'Sewing the Seeds of Change' is my favourite - I really like useful items that can double as advocacy messages. Just a quick glance can be enough to get someone's brain ticking.

I also like the ideals behind it - the organic cotton, where and how it's produced. A great looking functional, bag with a good conscience and a positive message :)

  129. I loved the piggy in the middle one in the kiddies section. What a great idea these bags are. The last supermarket here in NZ (New worl) holding onto free bags neded that today and now they are charging. For the first time ever i saw people carrying stuff out of the shop in their arms(Including me...Id forgotten my reuseables!!1)I love that the children have reuseale bags for all their stuff especially when it comes to camps etc.
Your blog is still a delight to read I was a bit offended at yesterdays comment that you wrote a post about...as if you wouldnt do your share. My hubby likes to do the real physical hard work in the garden but it is always a shared thing. Self sufficiency just wouldnt work otherwise would it?

  159. I don't want to be entered for the giveaway - ANY company that relocates to China does so for one reason only - CHEAP LABOUR. For all the talk about fair working conditions etc. why else are they in China but for the cheap labour? I think you are easily hoodwinked if you believe their hype. It's so easy to be drawn into believing what people tell you, they employ people to get their message across. Also you say the owners visit - ONCE A YEAR?! Just because some famous personality uses a product doesn't make it ethical. Anyone (as I have) who has been to other countries and seen how these companies use people will not buy their products.

  177. My new grandson is several days late in putting in an appearance. The "Jessie and Lulu" bag would be great for carrying around all the paraphenalia that a new baby needs these days. (My daughter-in-law says that the baby must take after his father in being late... :) ). The bag would make a great welcome gift for him.

It was interesting to hear how you and Hanno divide up the work. We also have jobs that are mainly done by one or other of us, according to our abilities and likes/dislikes. For example, my husband does the digging and planting and planning of the vegetable patch but I get to do the weeding. I feed and look after the hens but my husband gets to clean them out.

    Thanks for a great blog.

  183. Hi Rhonda, thought I might put my hand up too. My son is now two and a half, and he is rapidly entering the 'no more pram at the markets' stage. A kids' range bag would be fantastic for him to start being a fantastic fruit shopper at the markets, and the at-once-recognisable bag would mean for him, a too-cool reward. I see that they are washable, durable, and perfect for anyone who is 2.5yrs and walks through the farmers' market munching on strawberries and bananas at their leisure! Thanks for the chance, Kylie.
